A family of six has been evacuated after a massive tree smashed through the roof of their home in Sydney’s north.
Just after 10am on Monday morning, emergency services received reports of a tree that had gone through the roof of a property on Hull Rd in Beecroft.
Upon arriving at the scene, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) teams found a two-storey house had been crushed by a large 30m-high liquidambar tree while a family was inside.
Emergency crews helped six occupants, including two teenagers, make a safe and swift exit.
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the tree had fallen from the backyard of an adjoining property and landed on the roof of the house.
The top and side of the home sustained significant damage as a result and ripped apart the roof, in turn exposing a toxic material.
“There were trees down and wires down. Firefighters switched off gas and electricity and stabilised (the scene),” he told The Daily Telegraph.
“The Hazard Material Response Unit also attended and applied a binding glue solution over exposed asbestos fibre.”
Mr Dewberry said firefighters wore protective hazmat clothing “to collect and seal the exposed fibro” and used the binding glue solution to cover “parts of fibro that could not be contained”.
The dangerous material was then wrapped up tightly, secured in plastic bags and removed from the property.
Contractors were called in to make arrangements for a crane to come in and help remove the tree.
They are expected to be on the property until after lunchtime.
No injuries have been reported at this stage and it is understood the family has had to find alternative accommodation.
