A man has been flown to hospital in a serious but stable condition after an explosion rocked a council depot in southwest Sydney.
Police, ambulance and firefighters responded to the scene on Millwood Ave, Narellan about 11.20am on Wednesday.
Multiple ambulance crews, a rescue helicopter, a critical care doctor and a critical care paramedic treated the patient in the industrial area before he was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital suffering with burns to his back, chest, stomach, arms and face.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Andrew Cullen said paramedics arrived to a very challenging scene following an explosion with a single person requiring treatment.
“The man had some serious partial thickness burns to his torso, his arms and face,” he said.
“The critical care team stabilised him via intubation and he was flown to the burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital.
“Explosions are always dangerous and this incident could have been much worse.”
A statement from NSW Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are underway and the incident will be investigated by SafeWork NSW.
Camden Council confirmed the incident happened at one of its sites and released a statement.
“Following an incident involving a contractor at Council’s Millwood Ave Depot today, the matter is currently under investigation and Council is assisting authorities with their investigations,” a spokeswoman said.
“Accordingly, it would be inappropriate for Council to make further comment at this stage.”
