Outgoing 2GB host Chris Smith says the network has done him a “huge favour” by showing him the door and he will start work on a book about his career.
Guests including former prime minister Tony Abbott, 2GB hosts Ben Fordham and Erin Molan, and 40 former staff rallied around the radio announcer of 19 years at his farewell bash at a Pyrmont pub on Wednesday night.

A beaming Smith said as he left the venue: “In the end, it was all amicable. It was the first farewell drinks I’ve ever had — I’ve been sacked from all my other jobs.”
He added: “I knew from my early talks with 2GB this would likely be the result. I’m excited about the future.
“Among other things I’m going to write a book about the interviews I’ve had. The book will detail all the moments I’ve had off-air where the talent, like Sylvester Stallone, speak candidly.’’
“I am really excited to tell these stories.”
Smith was forced to resign after 2GB bosses made him leave his afternoon slot to swap with night presenter Steve Price — a move Smith refused to contemplate.
The move would have impacted Smith’s legal requirements to pick up his children from school and he ultimately said he could not swap.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday night Smith said he was going to stay busy.
He added, “I’m really happy and it almost feels like 2GB has done me a huge favour.”
Smith will stay close to the microphone, saying he will continue to pitch radio projects and work with Sky News.
“I’m looking forward to working with Sky and all the things that will come with that.”
