After a tough year, it is the little things Erin Molan is looking forward to this Christmas.
Spending the festive holiday with her parents just outside of Canberra, the popular radio and television host says family, classic movies and chocolate almonds are the go-to in her clan.
“It is just the small things like watching a movie like Love Actually on Christmas Eve,” Molan told The Daily Telegraph. “We’ve always had chocolate almonds, they are so good. It is just the little things that are lovely.”
The year 2021 has been filled with lows, and some highs, for Molan, who like so many people is understandably relieved to be putting the year behind her.
In September, she and long-time partner, Sean Ogilvy, announced their separation. They are parents to young daughter, Eliza.
On top of that, there were months of Covid lockdown, meaning Molan could not see her parents and siblings.
“I have always loved family more than anything else.
“But I think this year in particular, going through a family breakdown and having to do that without mum and dad or any family support close by, just reiterated how important it is to be surrounded by people that you love,” she said.
“And just for my daughter, to give her a family environment for her first Christmas since Sean and I have separated is really important and trying to give her as much normality as possible.”
Molan’s beloved father, Liberal Senator Jim Molan, 71, has also been undergoing intensive treatment for aggressive prostate cancer.
“Given what he has gone through, I am just blown away by how amazing he seems to be,” said Molan, who has partnered with delivery service DoorDash for its We DoorDash campaign.
“He has always been very stoic, that is his nature, but I am just blown away. He is in a really good place. We are blessed to live in a country where he has access to medicine which means we will have him for years to come.
“There is no cure but you can live with it for years and years, which is amazing.”
Molan is one of four children to the former Australian Army major general and wife Anne.
She will continue co-hosting her 2Day FM breakfast show alongside Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee in 2022, as well as starting a new job as a commentator on Sky News Australia and columnist for The Daily Telegraph.
Despite rumours, she has ruled out running for a seat in the upcoming federal election.
Molan has over the past few years been a strong advocate for change in the online bullying space and enjoyed a major win this year with the introduction of new legislation that protects Australians online.
“Not at this stage, down the track maybe,” she said.
“I am definitely open to it, just at the moment with my situation, if I was to run with an election coming up in the next few months, there is no way in the world that I could be the kind of mother to Eliza that she needs and that I need to be.
“There is no point entering politics now when I would spend 99 per cent of the time feeling guilty that I wasn’t with my daughter or that other areas were suffering.
“My daughter’s welfare is more important to me than anything else.”
