Elderly man killed in fire at Lightning Ridge

The body of an elderly man has been found after a campsite fire at a bush residence in state’s remote north-west was extinguished by emergency crews. It comes as temperatures in the area soar past 40C.

An elderly man has been killed in a campsite fire in the state’s remote north-west.

Emergency services found the bush residence of an 86-year-old man ablaze after being called to the site on Lorne Rd, Lightning Ridge just before 10am on Thursday.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but police discovered the body of the 86-year-old in the remains of the home’s bathroom.

While a crime scene was established by officers from Central North Police District, forensic examination has led police to believe that the blaze is not suspicious.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The man’s death comes amid a record-breaking heatwave across parts of the state.

Lightning Ridge recorded a top of 43C on Thursday, with temperatures in the area expected to stay above 40C over the next week.
