EXCLUSIVE: The Obeid family is fighting a plan to move its patriarch Eddie Obeid from a country prison to a Sydney jail the day before his release on Saturday so the media can get photographs of him.
The disgraced former NSW minister is currently in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre in Bathurst, where his family can drive into the prison complex and collect him away from the media.
Ironically, the former Labor Party powerbroker was one of the most accessible ministers, who would often ring journalist to leak stories he wanted published.
Corrective Services has made the decision to move Obeid, 76, from Bathurst to Silverwater prison on Friday, ahead of his release the next day.
Prison sources confirmed an Obeid family member rang the centre this morning and complained about the move, questioning why it was occurring.
It is understood the family has now made legal representations to Corrective Services opposing the plan.
The former minister is expected to go directly to the family's mansion in Hunters Hill for a reunion on Saturday morning.
Corrective Services is not making any official comment.
Obeid family solicitor Michael Bowe also declined to comment.
