Economist Liveable City Index sees Sydney drop out of the top 10 due to ‘perceived threat of terrorism’

Melbourne is crowing after coming top of the Economist magazine’s Intelligence Unit Liveable City Index for the sixth year.

Melbourne most liveable city for the sixth year

A perceived terrorism threat has booted Sydney from the top 10 of the world’s most liveable cities, which again is led by Melbourne.

It is the sixth year running that the Victorian capital has topped the Economist Intelligence Unit’s most liveable city index.

Vienna came second, Vancouver and Toronto third and fourth, and both Adelaide and Perth were rated ahead of the Harbour City.

The report cited a “heightened perceived threat of terrorism” as Sydney dropped to 11th from seventh last year.

“Although the top five cities remain unchanged, the past year has seen increasing instability across the world, causing volatility in the scores of many cities,” the report said.

“I can’t wait to make my annual phone call to Gregor Robertson, Mayor of Vancouver,,” said a celebratory Melbourne mayor Robert Doyle.

“We do not take this title for granted and are constantly planning and implementing policies that will continue to improve our quality of life,” he said

The index rated 140 cities around the world rated on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The ranking of Brisbane, which was 18th last year, is yet to be published.

The Economist Intelligence Unit says the index is helpful for global businesses to determine how much extra they pay employees moving between cities.

THE MOST LIVEABLE CITIES IN THE WORLD

1. Melbourne — 97.5 out of 100

2. Vienna — 97.4

3. Vancouver — 97.3

4. Toronto — 97.2

5=. Adelaide and Calgary — 96.6

7. Perth — 95.9

8. Auckland — 95.7

9. Helsinki — 95.6

10. Hamburg — 95.0

Damascus in Syria scored just 30.2 out of 100 and it wasn’t much better for the capital cities of Libya, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea.
