Easy way to access private parking in Sydney

Drivers will find it easier to get a parking space and residents with unused driveways and spaces can benefit too. Here’s how.

Drivers are set to find it easier to get a parking space and people with unused driveways and parking spaces will be able to make extra cash on the side through the state government’s new Park’nPay app.

The partnership between the NSW government and the Parkhound service comes as a new NRMA report found Sydney needs more commuter parking spaces to be on par with similar cities in the US.

The state government’s Park’nPay app will now make it easier for Sydney commuters to find a privately owned place to park.

Parkhound, an Uber-style service for parking spaces, allows people to rent out their unused driveways and parking spaces.

The marketplace, featuring more than 18,000 hosts, is now available on the Park’nPay app.

It will make it easier for people with spare driveway space to lease out the valuable real estate and for people who need parking spots to rent more spaces.

Better access to underused car spaces was one of the ideas raised at The Daily Telegraph’s Parking Summit in May.

Transport Minister Rob Stokes said the Park’nPay app would help drivers find a parking space.

“The Parkhound feature can be used by drivers to find the perfect spot when street parking isn’t available, while giving hosts the chance to make some extra cash when their car spots would otherwise sit empty,” Mr Stokes said.

The amount of parking available for commuters has increased by almost 13 per cent in six years but still lags behind commuter parking space in five similar cities.

Sydney now has 8.9 commuter parking spaces per 1000 people. The city lags Boston (11.2), Seattle (10.7) and San Francisco (9.9). The city’s commuter parking spaces per 1000 people exceeds Philadelphia (5.4) and San Diego (4.7), the NRMA found.

The NRMA, which has backed the Park’nPay app, said boosting parking spaces near public transport hubs is vital to making public transport a viable option.

Junior doctor Nadine Kauley commutes from Arncliffe to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick by car because she has “limited” public transport options.

She hasn’t been able to secure staff parking, so rents a private space nearby from someone who doesn’t need it.

Renting the space costs her about $60 a week, compared with $30 a day parking at the hospital.

“It’s pretty easy, and I’m lucky – it’s 24/7 access. For me that’s good with my job, I’ve got a swipe card that allows me to go in and out as I please,” she said.
