NSW Police are investigating whether a bus driver had a medical episode before a crash which saw his bus smash into bollards and end up on the wrong side of the road with its wheels in the air on Thursday afternoon.

After the crash about 12.30pm, The Daily Telegraph understands the driver told witnesses “I blacked out”, with police confirming he was taken to hospital along with two other people.

Sources said the bus crashed into a ute with a refrigeration unit on the back of it, sending the unit flying into another car.

The bus eventually smashed into yellow plastic bollards on Victoria Rd, near Lyons Rd, in Drummoyne, before mounting the permanent bollards and crossing onto oncoming traffic.

NSW Police, paramedics and fire and rescue crews are on the scene, with both directions closed off to traffic as they work to remove the bus and release the ute.

A police spokesman confirmed neither driver or passengers on the bus were seriously injured or trapped, with three people being treated for minor injuries and assessed by paramedics at the site.

Four fire and rescue trucks arrived at the crash scene and worked to free the driver of the ute from the rubble.

The bus remained on a dividing barrier which runs down Victoria Rd, as crews worked to remove broken off debris surrounding the area.

Police soon reopened one westbound lane to allow building traffic through, with diversions in place for east bound traffic.

Michael Lindsey and Madison Brandis were waiting in their car at the set of lights on Victoria Rd and witnessed the collision.

“It was a massive bang. We heard a huge explosion, I thought it was a bomb,” Ms Brandis said.

“We saw the back of the car come off, the cab of the ute separated.”

Mr Lindsey said it looked as though “Michael Bay was directing the crash”.

“It (the bus) jumped up there. It was insane. It was something out of a movie,” he said.

“It doesn’t make sense how it happened.”

Ms Brandis said the crash stopped all drivers along the Drummoyne road who quickly hopped out of their cars to check on those behind the wheels of the two vehicles.

“We were the first to check on the ute driver,” Ms Brandis said.

“He wasn’t really speaking English, he had his hands on his head.

“He looked so shocked.”

The pair said following the crash, liquid was “running all over the road.”

“The whole thing was loud as anything,” Mr Lindsey said.

“I was a bit shook up initially.”
