The moment a drone hovers over a basketball court in a Sydney jail before dropping illicit goods into a strategically placed rubbish bin has been captured in startling CCTV vision.

It’s one haul in a Corrective Services blitz looking for smuggled substances in prisons that also included searching visitors, with officers allegedly catching one woman with four packages of drugs in her bra, one with white powder in a balloon in her mouth and another wearing a hair tie containing drugs and tobacco.

In the vision at Parklea Correctional Centre on April 19, the suspiciously placed bin is in the middle of the yard before a package suddenly falls from the sky – dropping right into it in a bulls eye drop from the drone above.

Authorities said officers confiscated the package, which contained a vape and tobacco.

Corrective Services NSW seized more than $220,800 worth of contraband at jails in Wellington, Kempsey, Nowra, the Hunter and Silverwater during the recent operation.

The most valuable consignment was 120 strips of buprenorphine found at Kempsey worth up to $76,000 in custody.

Buprenorphineis used to treat opioid use disorders, which includes addictions to drugs such as heroin, and is often used in prison rehab programs.

Authorities said officers were screening visitors at Wellington Correctional Centre when a dog honed in on one woman, who allegedly admitted she had illicit goods.

She was taken to an interview room where she allegedly removed four packages from her bra.

The woman allegedly found with white powder in a red balloon in her mouth was also at Wellington.

At Mid North Coast Correctional Centre in Kempsey, another woman was selected to be searched and handed over a hair tie to officers.

The black hair tie was cut open by officers and seven packages containing drugs and tobacco were allegedly inside.

Hunter Correctional Centre officers also received a report of a potential drug drop at nearby Cessnock Hospital.

They went to the hospital and searched bins in a bathroom adjoining a waiting room and found a nappy that contained tobacco and syringes.

“Visitors are critically important to the wellbeing of inmates, but what isn’t helpful is attempting to smuggle in contraband that can have a devastating impact not only on the lives of their loved ones but to many others in our custody,” Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Gary McCahon said.

“Prisons are one of the most monitored places in our state – when you enter a centre or complex, you’re being watched and high-visibility operations like these are a good example of why.

“They can happen at any time, at any centre and, combined with our other contraband detection methods, mean there is a high chance you will be caught.”

Corrections Minister Anoulack Chanthivong said people who try to smuggle drugs into jails will be caught.

“You ... may even end up in a cell yourself,” he said.
