Dominic Perrottet says Scott Morrison’s super plan won’t lift house prices

Premier Dominic Perrottet has weighed in on Scott Morrion’s first home buyer plan, and ‘concerns’ it will drive up property prices.

Premier Dominic Perrottet has welcomed Scott Morrison’s housing policy, which allows first home buyers to withdraw funds from their superannuation account, and said he doesn’t believe it will drive up house prices.

“I don’t believe (it will drive up prices) so. I think… when policies are pursued, there is naturally the concern about pushing up prices. I’ve never shared that concern,” he said.

“And particularly in circumstances where it’s not necessarily first home buyers competing against first home buyers. That’s what’s always lost in these debates.

“It’s first time buyers competing against those who already have a home or who are investors who have already had a new accumulation of wealth that first home buyers simply don’t have.”

Mr Perrottet said the circumstances were different now than when superannuation was first introduced — when house ownership was more prominent.

“I think it’s great that we look at ways (to improve ownership) whether it’s the opposition leader through shared equity, whether it’s the Prime Minister through the super proposal,” he said

“A pleasing aspect of it is… the $50,000 then goes back into your super on the sale of that property and I think that is a very positive step.”

Mr Perrottet said there needs to be more collaboration between the state and federal government to create “structural reform” on housing affordability.

“In terms of structural reform, states can’t embrace structural reform on their own. We need greater collaboration between state and federal governments,” he said.

“I really welcome the initiative of the federal government on Sunday in relation to downsizing.

“That’s a good initiative too but we need to work together and if we don’t sit down at the table and work together on this, what you’ll have is hodgepodge policy.”
The comments come as the major parties continual to brawl over housing policy.

On Sunrise, National’s leader Barnaby Joyce blew up at Labor’s Tanya Plibersek’s refusal to answer a question about housing policy details, yelling over and exasperating TV host Natalie Barr.

Barr then commented that she felt sorry for voters trying to sort of the differences and details of the policies offered by the major parties at this election.
