A world record holding competitive eater has named a vegan hotdog as the best in Sydney, choosing it over iconic Harry’s Cafe de Wheels, which has been engulfed in controversy since changing its bun recipe.

Vegan fast food chain Lord Of The Fries was chosen as the top dog by two time Guinness World Record holding eater Jesse Freeman.

After tasting five hotdogs from across greater Sydney, including Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs at Parramatta, The Hot Dog Man at Manly, Smoky Sue’s at Neutral Bay, Lord of the Fries and Harry’s, Mr Freeman picked the simple faux dog as his favourite.

He gave Smoky Sue’s loaded dog the same score, however when asked to choose a favourite he opted for the no meat, no dairy option.

But the battle wasn’t over, as his girlfriend Kira Rodionov picked the decadent Hot Dog de Wheels with chilli from Harry’s.

Since 1938 Harry’s had widely been considered the best hotdog in Sydney — if not Australia — serving guests including Frank Sinatra, Colonel Sanders, Pamela Anderson, Brooke Shields, Sir Richard Branson and more.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday revealed in the new delicious Sydney column that new owners had changed the bun, to the outrage of regulars including former Kings Cross boss John Ibrahim.

Mr Freeman, who has gained a reputation for his love of burgers stacked with up to 10 patties, was shocked to find out he had favoured the vegan dog after he delivered his judgment.

“I was a fan of the loaded hotdogs because it’s more than just a hotdog, but I really have to go back to the classics and it was No. 3 with that really dense, beautiful roll — simple and done well,” he said. “I loved it.”

Mr Freeman, who has 170,000 followers on Instagram where he posts under the name Food Coma Eats, covered his face with his hands when informed that was the vegan hotdog.

“I’m shook — you’re kidding?” he said. “My followers are going to hate me.”
