Do Something Day: Meals from the heart to help sick children smile again

WHEN employees at The Wests Group Australia decided they needed to do something to help sick kids, they went the whole hog — and cow.

Decked out in cowboy gear, The Wests Group staff served an American-themed menu including ribs and DIY milkshakes for the children and families in the Royal McDonald House Newcastle last Thursday.

The club employees stepped up for the “Meals from the Heart” program.

It is also the perfect example of helping out that should inspire others for Do Something Day, which is on Wednesday July 25 this year.

On that day everyone is encouraged to step up and help the many charities and organisations that need assistance — and even commit to giving them a hand for the whole year.

Wests Group’s manager for people and culture Lee Smith was one of the eight employees who cooked up a storm for the sick kids.

“It was a really great experience, there were lots of families, lots of children and parents. Some of them have been there for days and weeks and some of them have been there for months, so it was a grounding experience,” Mr Smith said.

“There wasn’t much food left and the kids seemed to be on a sugar high by the end of it.”

Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW chief executive Ross Bingham said the “Meals from the Heart” program can give families crucial hours with their kids.

“We’ve had families say that having those hours off when they haven’t had to prepare meals … has meant they are able to spend more time by the child,” Mr Bingham said.
