TEENAGE hit-and-run victim April-Lee Gillen has woken from her coma as police investigate the possibility she was deliberately run over after refusing a lift from a young man.
The 17-year-old has been fighting for her life since she was found by the side of the road near Wollongong on April 20. “We did think we could possibly lose her,’’ her sister, Kimberly, said yesterday.
“But she is alive and doing well.”
Ms Gillen was out with friends on the night she was hit.
She had decided to walk home about 12.30am but soon afterwards posted on a social networking website that she was worried someone was following her and needed help.
About 30 minutes later she was found by the road with critical head injuries consistent with being hit by a car.
Her family has set up an internet fundraising page to raise $7000 towards Ms Gillen’s medical costs and rehabilitation.
