Fake videos of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and opposition leader Peter Dutton have been shared on social media as part of a campaign to raise awareness about deep fake technology.
Independent Senator David Pocock has created and shared fake videos of Mr Albanese and Mr Dutton showing the pair announcing support for a total ban on gambling advertising — completely at odds with their political positions.
The incredibly realistic videos were shared on Mr Pocock’s social media to highlight how easy it is to generate fake content.
The ACT politician introduced a private member’s bill on electoral reform in addition to multiple bills by Warringah MP Zali Steggall on truth in political advertising.
“For years, Australians have called for more integrity in politics and more recently have been expressing their concern about the risks from the unregulated use of artificial intelligence,” Mr Pocock said.
“Independents have been pushing for truth in political advertising, including banning the use of AI in election materials since before the last election.
“The failure of both major parties to introduce strong truth-in-political advertising laws and ban the use of AI is irresponsible and putting our democracy at risk.“
It comes after the Australian Electoral Commissioner told a senate inquiry into artificial intelligence that they expect to see more AI interference at Australian elections after the same trend played out in elections around the world.
The AEC does not have any legal avenues or the technical abilities to deal with AI-generated content during elections.
