The 81-year-old made the bombshell announcement in a letter he posted on social media while isolating with Covid at his home in Delaware.
The pressure was mounting on the President to pull out of the race after a disaster live TV debate against Donald Trump last month.
He refused to stand aside, but in the end the pressure got too much.
He’s endorsed vice president Kamala Harris to be the Democrat nominee, but who takes on Trump is still yet to be decided.
