The opening of Crown’s Barangaroo casino floor has been welcomed as a major step in helping NSW rebuild its tourism industry.
The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) announced on Wednesday that Crown would be able to conditionally operate its casino after rebuilding its gaming model “from the ground up”.
Committee for Sydney chief executive Gabriel Metcalf welcomed the decision. “This is an important milestone in rebuilding a key segment of the NSW visitor economy,” he said.
ILGA chairman Philip Crawford said the licence was granted after Crown had made “deep structural change around governance,anti-money laundering measures and corporate culture.
“After more than one year’s work with Crown, the Authority is pleased to have reached a stage where Crown can open its casino operations on a conditional basis.”
The work to operate on a conditional basis came after the 2021 Bergin Inquiry found Crown unsuitable to hold a casino licence.
The Commission will look to address the recommendations of the Bergin Inquiry including a ban on junket operators and strictrequirements to monitor accounts for criminal activity.
Crown chief executive Steve McCann said the granting of the licence marked an “important day for Crown, our customers andour people.
“We will now finalise our opening plans and look forward to shortly announcing the details and timing of our launch.”
The news comes as Hospitality and Racing Minister Kevin Anderson announced a major reform of the casino industry includingthe establishment of a NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC).
“A dedicated Chief Commissioner will be appointed to lead the NICC. They will be supported by up to four additional Commissioners, including at least one with specialist anti-money laundering expertise,” Mr Anderson said.
