A WOMAN has been caught trying to smuggle a mobile phone and charger into Silverwater jail by hiding them between her buttocks.

Guards at Silverwater Correctional Centre made the discovery when they spotted the woman “acting suspiciously” during a visit with a male prisoner.

The woman was then interviewed and confessed to having the electronics hidden between her buttocks, along with a small amount of tobacco.

The woman’s visiting rights have been suspended by Corrective Services.

A NSW Corrective Services spokeswoman said the department was expanding its security operations to prevent contraband, including phones, being smuggled into jails.

“Full body scanners are being rolled out to all maximum and minimum security prisons,” she said.

“We have stepped up efforts across the system with intelligence gathering, frequent inmate, visitor and cell searches and ground patrols, increased security, detection dogs and X-ray screening.

“In addition, mobile phone jamming at Lithgow prison has been extended for another three years.”
