NSW has opened 29 specialist coronavirus fever clinics across the state to deal with the ­expected influx in cases as the state braces for an “exponential” rise in cases after 37 people were diagnosed on Monday — the greatest one-day jump since the virus hit.

The daily rate of infection is ­accelerating — from 19.6 per cent on Sunday to 27.6 per cent on Monday — with a total of 171 cases now in the state, more than half the national total.

Major public hospitals across Sydney and in regional areas including Orange, Broken Hill and Dubbo now have fully operational COVID-19 clinics established.

The majority of clinics are open seven days a week as part of a broader effort to reduce pressure on GPs and emergency departments as the virus spreads.

People with symptoms including a cough, fever and shortness of breath who have either recently returned from overseas or been in contact with a confirmed coronavirus case are encouraged to go to their nearest clinic for testing.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly on Monday urged people not to seek testing if they did not fit the criteria, as Australia was facing a shortage of some “consumables” used in the lab to conduct tests.

“With testing, you need to look at where you get the best bang for your buck,” he said.
