COVID NSW: Police officer, nurse assaulted in separate Sydney incidents

A police officer and nurse have been assaulted by members of the public in two separate COVID-19 related incidents.

Two men are before Sydney courts after a nurse and police officer were assaulted in separate COVID-19 related incidents.

One of the men will front Parramatta Local Court today after assaulting female police officers who asked him to wear a mask while waiting for public transport last night.

The 72-year-old was allegedly aggressive and argumentative to police as they patrolled Castle Hill metro station around 9.30pm.

He claimed being told to wear a mask was a violation of human rights.

Police allege the man, who did not have an exemption from wearing a mask, punched one of the officers when they asked for his identification.

He was arrested and taken to Castle Hill Police Station where he was charged with assaulting and intimating police as well as not wearing a face covering.

His bail was refused and is expected to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.

Neither of the female officers were physically injured during the arrest.

In separate incident, a nurse was allegedly assaulted by a patient at COVID-19 clinic in North Ryde.

She approached a car on Friday January 15, where a man was smoking a cigarette.

The woman asked him to put it out before he allegedly becoming abusive at staff and throwing a takeaway coffee cup at the nurse.

The 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. His bail was refused and will appear at Burwood Local Court today.
