A 63-year-old man will face court on Monday after an alleged shootout on the state’s north coast which saw police vehicles riddled with bullets and a dozen cops forced to take shelter in a civilian’s home.
Police will allege more than 20 shots were fired after they were called to Dunoon, 20km north of Lismore, at 9pm on Saturday after reports of a man shooting at homes on Rayward Road and Duncan Road.
On arrival the man allegedly fired at police, forcing them to take cover in their vehicles.
According to police, one vehicle was “peppered with bullets”, sustaining “significant” damage, with a female sergeant returning fire at the man.
A female senior constable in the car at the time was uninjured.
During the operation, more than twenty shots were allegedly fired with twelve police officers and six local residents taking refuge in a nearby home while other residents were ordered to remain inside.
Specialist units were called in, including from interstate, with the Tactical Operations Regional Response, negotiators, and police rescue assisted by Queensland PolAir and the dog unit.
Following a multi-hour stand-off, officers arrested a man outside a Rayward Road property about midnight.
A number of crime scenes were established in the area with a shotgun and spent cartridges recovered.
Images supplied by NSW Police show a broken-down shotgun in a kitchen, while other pictures show bulletholes in a police vehicle and apparent pellet-marks on the windscreen.
No residents were injured in the shootings, despite being at home, while no police were injured in the operation.
The man was taken to Lismore Police Station, where he was charged with four counts of firing a firearm at dwelling with disregard for safety, two counts of discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest, and two counts of fire firearm in or near public place.
He will face Lismore Local Court on Monday.
