Streets have been flooded and houses inundated with water after an above ground pipeline burst in southern Sydney.

Footage has captured the moment water started bursting from the 1.5m pipe at Binya Place in Como about 1pm on Friday.

Water could be seen shooting through fences and windows into nearby homes before emergency services raced to the site and managed to lower the water pressure.

Sydney Water crews are at the scene attempting to shut off the pipe, however, it is understood three homes have been severely impacted by water damage.

Another three homes have reportedly sustained superficial damage which was cleaned up by residents, according to NSW State Emergency Services (SES).

It is understood Sydney Water is organising temporary accommodation and insurance claim briefings for the worst-affected residents.

A spokesperson for Sydney Water confirmed network technicians were assessing a leak at the site when the water main burst.

As of 5pm, crews had isolated the main and repairs on the pipeline were underway.

“Customer advocates are on site working with impacted customers and assessing the damage,” the spokesperson said.

“Sydney Water apologises for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”

It is understood the pipeline connects to the nearby Woronora Dam which supplies drinking water for the Sutherland Shire and North Wollongong area.

A spokesperson for the NSW Transport Management Centre confirmed services were not impacted at Como Station. Delays on the T4 line at Sutherland train station have been caused by track repairs unrelated to the spill.

Videos of the incident have been circulating on local community pages with reactions split between sympathy for the homeowners and frustration with the disruption.

“Those poor people … I hope they are safe,” one resident commented.

“Bugger the washings on the line … hopefully they closed the windows before going to work,” another wrote.

“How shockingly wasteful. Time the infrastructure is replaced,” a third posted.

The SES is offering sandbags to affected residents.
