In cold and heavy rain an injured woman was rescued from the remote Ebor region west of Coffs Harbour in a nine-hour operation.

A couple had parked along Point Lookout Road on Sunday (April 24) and took off on a trek in the New England National Park.

The woman, in her 40s, later fell, breaking her lower leg and her partner made the triple 000 call, according to a NSW Ambulance spokesperson.

“He said: ‘it’s very wet and challenging out here’.”

The call came in at 3.20pm and the woman wouldn’t make it to Armidale hospital until just after midnight.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was also called but had to turn around due to the heavy rain and fog.

The Ebor region and Cathedral Rock National Park is popular with hikers and campers with Dorrigo 46km to the east and Coffs Harbour about 55 kilometres away, along the Waterfall Way.

Three road ambulances responded and paramedics called on the support of SES volunteers from the Dorrigo, Armidale and Guyra units to help reach the patient and carry her out.

SES spokesperson Greg Nash said just under 20 volunteers were involved in the tricky operation trekking for several kilometres through mud and down a steep ravine using a chainsaw to gain access to the patient through the trees.

When NSW Ambulance paramedics and SES volunteers finally reached the patient they worked to stabilise the fracture and begin the long journey to carry her back out to the nearest road.

She finally arrived at Armidale hospital around 12.30am.
