Less than a week after a young man was stabbed to death getting ready for a surf at Coffs Harbour a woman has been assaulted and knocked unconscious in the same vicinity.

About 6am on Wednesday, police say a woman was stopped on the Coffs Creek Walkway when she was struck from behind and assaulted, rendering her unconscious.

About 10.23am the same day, two members of the public stopped to assist the woman before calling an ambulance.

The walkway is popular with walkers and cyclists along the creek which flows out to the ocean and under the bridge connecting the Coffs Harbour jetty area with Park Beach, where young Kye Schaefer was killed in a brutal, unprovoked stabbing attack in the Coffs Harbour Surf Club carpark as he got ready to head into the water.

Coffs Clarence Police District crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty said he was “reasonably confident” the assault on the woman was not linked to the fatal attack on Kye.

Chief Inspector Flaherty said police were concerned by the length of time the woman lay unconscious without help from passers by.

It is believed she went down to a section of the creek with a rope swing to watch the sun rise.

The woman, aged 45, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Police District were notified and have commenced inquiries into the incident.

As those inquiries continue, police urge anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area between 5.30am and 10.30am to come forward.

Police have increased patrols in the local area and urge anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
