The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A teenager is in a critical condition after a car slammed into a tree on a fire trail west of Coffs Harbour today.

Police were notified of the smash at Upper Corindi just after 1pm on September 29.

A man at the scene said the vehicle, thought to be a Toyota Kluger, had hit a tree and caught fire.

Coffs Harbour police said a female passenger in the vehicle was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Two other females in the vehicle were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Police said the driver will undergo mandatory testing.

As well as police and NSW Ambulance, Rural Fire Service units attended, including the Nana Glen brigade.

The vehicle was destroyed, and there were signs the car fire had set nearby bush alight.

Given the heavily wooded nature of the crash scene, the badly injured patient - thought to be aged in her late teens - had to be winched to the rescue helicopter.

Police said the crash investigation unit is examining the incident.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said dirt fire trails were often uneven and rutted, and asked members of the public to “drive to the conditions”.
