COFFS Harbour is among a list of priority resettlement hubs as the government prepares to accept 12,000 extra Syrian refugees.
New South Wales will take on the bulk of the asylum seekers, with councils in Wagga Wagga, Newcastle, Albury and Wollongong already nominating their regions as willing to take on their fair share.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said rigorous background checks would be carried out on all prospective refugees before they were allowed into the country.
"For a number of reasons we can minimise the risk posed to our country, not least of which is the fact that if we have any hesitation in relation to a particular application we discard it and move on to the next one," Mr Dutton said on talkback radio.
