Prisoner assaulted at Mid North Coast Correctional Centre at Kempsey, cellmate charged

Charges have been laid after an inmate at Kempsey was allegedly attacked, leaving him with injuries to his head, back and torso.

Charges have been laid in relation to the alleged assault of an inmate at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre at Kempsey.

Paramedics were called to the facility just before 9pm on Thursday, May 12.

Two NSW Ambulance road crews attended and assessed the prisoner.

A spokesperson said he was suffering multiple lacerations to his head and face.

The patient was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Mid North Coast Correctional Centre is located on Aldavilla Road at Aldavilla, west of Kempsey.

A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson confirmed the incident saying staff responded to an alleged assault of a 29-year-old man at 8.35pm.

“The man was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for treatment to injuries on his head, back and torso,” the spokesperson said.

“His 23-year-old cellmate was placed into segregation, pending further investigations.”

At around 11pm that night, police were notified of the alleged assault involving the two inmates.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, investigators attended the facility and issued the younger man with a court attendance notice for the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and destroy or damage property.

He remains in custody and will appear at Kempsey Local Court on Monday June 27.
