State Pennant bowls over Coffs

RINKS on the Coffs Coast have been playing host to some of the highest standard bowls seen in the region for a long time, as the State Pennant finals play out.

THE rinks on the Coffs Coast have been playing host to some of the highest standard bowls seen in the region for a long time as the State Pennant finals are being played.

West Coffs Bowling Club are hosting the grade one pennant finals while the grade two finals are being played at Park Beach, grade three at Woolgoolga and the grade four finals are being played at Sawtell.

The nine teams playing on the greens at the Catholic Club in the top grade are Neutral Bay, Warilla, Engadine, St Johns Park, Bomaderry, Asquith, Springwood, The Entrance and Port City who knocked out the West Coffs ladies in the zone finals to stop the local ladies playing in a home-town final.

Large crowds of supporters for all of the visiting clubs have been lining the greens as they cheer their respective clubs on in their chase for glory.

“The weather has been good, the greens have proven to be very good and the West Coffs girls have worked really hard to keep the visitors happy,” West Coffs Ladies president Margaret Hoschke said yesterday.

The top grade are playing in a round robin series with the final matches being played tomorrow morning. At this stage the highly credentialled team from St Johns Park have proven themselves to be the team to beat and look like being the first across the line.

The finals of the other three grades will also be played at the Catholic Club tomorrow morning after the sectional winners are decided this afternoon.

St Johns Park are also looking good at the moment at Woolgoolga in grade three and a final against Tura Beach is a distinct possibility.

Tura Beach are also travelling well at Sawtell in the fourth grade matches along with Scone RSL.

It's a tight contest in grade two where Oak Flats, Penrith City and South West Rocks are all in with a chance of winning the State pennant.
