SES warn of Coffs Creek flooding, contamination for Coffs Harbour

Coffs Harbour is set for a “very wet week” ahead with up to 160mm of rainfall over four days. Now, the NSW SES have warned of the risks as they urge the public to be prepared for flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted up to 160mm of rain could hit Coffs Harbour this week as Northern NSW continues to recover from devastating flooding.

State Emergency Service information officer Scott McLennan said the rain is “not looking at easing up.”

“Given how wet the grounds are, we need to be aware of flash flooding,” he said.

“We are in for a very wet week.”

Mr McLennan urged people to be prepared by cleaning their gutter and ensuring anything loose is tied down.

Earlier flooding caused contamination to waters, and extra rainfall could push it into waterways.

“There are poisons in the rivers and debris from existing waters,” he said.

Mr McLennan said dead animals, crop pesticides, run offs asphalt, gas cylinders, fuel cans, and engine leaks have contaminated waters.

“It becomes a great harbouring and nesting grounds for mosquitoes.”

He said people need to carefully consider if travel is necessary and urged drivers to avoid flood waters.

“If there is water over the road, don't drive,”

“It needs to stop, we are rescuing people and it puts volunteers at risk.”

Mr Mclennan warned that trees and branches – cadaghi in particular – may be loose and prone to falling.

NSW SES are also monitoring Coffs Creek, as it is “prone to quick flash flooding”.

“It doesn't take a lot for it to flood – that’s one we are mindful of,” Mr McLennan said.

He said people should listen to warnings and be prepared, and to follow evacuation orders.

“When you’re told to evacuate, please evacuate,” he said.

“Just because it hasn’t happened before, doesn't mean it won't happen. We can't get to everyone.”

He said the SES are in position and are adequately resourced.

“We are being supported by RFS, Surf Life saving, NSW police, Ambulance, ADF and SES QLD and Victoria,” Mr McLennan said

“It’s all hands on deck.

“We can't control the rain, but we can control our actions and reactions.”
