Police have launched a probe after a prominent seafood supplier erupted into flames on the Mid-North Coast.
Fire and Rescue NSW received several frantic calls at about 8pm on Wednesday after reports Laurieton Seafoods was well alight on Mill St, Laurieton.
“When Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Laurieton arrived, they were confronted with a medium, single-level building well alight, with intense fire activity,” a Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
“Firefighters quickly got to work, attacking the fire from the outside.”
Port Macquarie Fire Brigade, along with Rural Fire Service crews, assisted at the scene in battling the fierce blaze.
Paramedics attended to assist a firefighter who suffered an ankle injury.
Police said in a statement the building was unoccupied at the time and there were no other injuries.
“Unfortunately, firefighters were unable to save the building, and the cause of the fire is not yet known,” the Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
“The scene has been handed over to officers attached to the Mid-North Coast Police District, who are investigating the blaze.”
Locals expressed shock over the blaze, with one saying the business was “iconic” and served “beautiful food”.
“Very sad news. My thoughts go out to the owners, staff and fisherman. Everyone is always top notch and definitely don’t deserve this,” another man said.
A crime scene was established as police attached to Mid-North Coast Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
