A man has been refused bail after allegedly assaulting two females and intimidating them with a sledgehammer at Boambee East late on Monday night.
Keith Donovan faces a range of assault, prohibited drug possession and contravene apprehended violence order (AVO) charges.
The 22-year-old sat quietly under guard in the dock at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday.
Defence lawyer Christopher Huxley sought his client’s release from custody.
Donovan’s mother sat just a couple of metres away in the court’s public gallery.
Police allege the Blacktown man assaulted two females between 11pm and 11.23pm on Monday, causing actual bodily harm to one of them.
Officers allege he was armed with a sledgehammer with intent to commit an indictable offence – intimidation.
Police have also charged Donovan with possessing 0.36 grams of meth and 0.3g in tabs of the opioid buprenorphine.
Prosector Heidi Warren opposed bail and told the court one of the alleged victims was still in hospital. She said further charges may be laid.
Mr Huxley conceded the allegations against Donovan were “serious”, but sought his release with bail conditions including living with his mother at Macksville, not entering Boambee East and being subjected to a 7pm to 7am curfew.
Donovan has been charged with common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, breaching an AVO, two counts of possessing prohibited drugs and being armed with intent while having previous conviction.
No pleas have been entered.
Magistrate Roger Prowse said the prosecution appeared to have a “very strong case”.
He said a full-time jail-term would be “inevitable” if Donovan was convicted.
Bail was refused by Mr Prowse.
The case was adjourned to September 12.
