A Coffs Harbour amateur boxer and instructor, who became romantically involved with his alleged victim after giving her lessons, has denied several charges in relation to an alleged incident that started at a local hotel and continued along the highway.

Javed Khaksar, 24, appeared before Coffs Harbour Local Court on Monday where a hearing into his charges was part heard before Magistrate Theresa Hamilton.

The 24-year-old is charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic); drive motor vehicle menaces another with intent; drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous; stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic); knowingly drive vehicle in manner menaces other; and negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm).

The charges relate to a night out at the Coast Hotel on March 26 2022 with the alleged incident stretching into the early hours of March 27.

The hotel fronts on to the Pacific Highway just south of the CBD.

The court heard the couple had been friends for some time but developed an intimate relationship when Khaksar gave the alleged victim, who was 18 at the time, boxing lessons.

Their relationship lasted for approximately five months before she called it off, around three weeks prior to the alleged offending, when she started to notice some “poor behaviour”.

She told the court Khaksar posted various “blurbs” about her on social media after they broke up about her not being the person people thought she was, so she blocked him.

According to the alleged victim’s evidence, Khaksar attended what she referred to as the “club” and came close to her on several occasions on the night of March 27. She said he would stand at the various exits when she attempted to leave.

“He was trying to be in my view the whole time,” she told the court.

“I couldn’t reach the exits because he was always standing there.”

Khaksar was at the hotel with his brother who the alleged victim called “Freddy” and who she was on friendly terms with.

The court heard Khaksar does not drink alcohol with his lawyer Erica Timmons telling the court he can be “quite intense”.

The alleged victim said: “he moved quickly with things, yes”.

She told the court that when she went to leave the Coast Hotel she saw Khaksar hiding in bushes outside and she and her friend (who arrived in separate cars) were too scared to drive home so they called a male friend.

The alleged victim told the court Khaksar then started calling out to her outside the hotel but she covered her ears because “I didn’t want him to have access to my head basically”.

The male arrived and jumped in the friend’s car and the two cars left the location with the alleged victim detouring around town and joining the highway again near Park Beach Plaza on her way back to Sandy Beach.

According to her evidence, Khaksar located her again and followed her in his silver Skyline – sounding his horn, travelling closely behind her and then overtaking and cutting in front of her before slamming on the brakes.

At one point, according to her evidence, he stopped his car on the side of the road with his hazard lights on and stood out on the highway and she only narrowly avoided crashing into him.

She told the court she took several exits including one at Moonee Beach to lose him, but that he “followed me right into my driveway”.

The alleged victim reported the incident on March 28 with Khaksar granted bail the same day.

The matter is listed again for hearing on July 21.
