A wheel brace and car jack were allegedly thrown at police during a high speed chase which started at Tyndale and ended with a vehicle being torched north of Coffs.

A man was arrested and charged and another is on the run.

Angus Hazledine appeared before Coffs Harbour Local Court via audiovisual link on Monday.

His lawyer applied for bail saying Mr Hazledine had been asked by another person to “go on a road trip” and when he realised that person was “on the run” he didn’t have the opportunity to leave.

The court heard the 27-year-old lived in Victoria with his mother.

He wiped away tears as details of the incident were heard before Magistrate Ian Rodgers.

Police allege they saw a Mitsubishi Lancer with no number plates on the M1 highway at Tyndale about 7.20am on Sunday.

Police further allege the Mitsubishi failed to stop, accelerating away, and that a wheel brace and car jack were thrown from the vehicle as it was pursued by officers.

The chase was terminated shortly after due to safety concerns.

Police prosecutor Kylie Banks told the court on Monday that police officers were incredibly fortunate to avoid the items that were allegedly thrown at their car travelling at speeds of up to 150km/h.

Police allege the Mitsubishi was seen again by officers on Solitary Island Way at Corindi Beach about 8am and was followed once again.

At Mullaway, police say they saw the two occupants of the Mitsubishi leave a motel. They left in separate vehicles including the Mitsubishi Lancer and an allegedly stolen Ford utility.

After avoiding police again, the Mitsubishi was found abandoned in Darkum Road, Mullaway, after being set alight.

Then at about 8.30am, the Ford was seen by police on Mullaway Drive, Mullaway and a pursuit initiated, with road spikes successfully deployed.

The Ford was found abandoned on Solitary Islands Way and the two occupants fled - one on foot into nearby bushland and the other on a trail bike.

Police pursued the motorbike but this was called off due to safety concerns.

A short time later Mr Hazledine was arrested in bushland and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he faced the following charges:

  • be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner,
  • never licensed person drive vehicle on road,
  • use Class A vehicle number plate not correctly fixed,
  • take and drive conveyance without consent of owner,
  • use offensive weapon in company to prevent detention,
  • three counts of larceny, and destroy or damage property.

Mr Hazledine was refused bail and his case adjourned.

Inquiries continue to locate the second man.
