The North Wall car park at the jetty foreshores will be closed for several months as works are set to begin on a major $1.33m transformation, which will see “valuable” foreshore land reclaimed for recreational use.

Carparking spaces will be more than tripled, and a beach hub area featuring a new vendor site, a shower and dog wash area, picnic facilities, seating with clear ocean views and even underground power for events will be made available at the site.

Works are scheduled to start at the end of the NSW school holidays, from Monday April 19 if weather permits, and are estimated to be finished in three months time.

The North Wall project is being undertaken by Coffs Harbour City Council, and is separate from the State Government’s redevelopment project which focuses on crown land along Jordan Esplanade.

Traffic controls will be in place for the first day of site establishment and the car park will be closed for the expected three month duration of the project.

The carparking will be relocated slightly west of the foreshore to reclaim recreation space which will feature the beach hub, and will see spaces increased from 20 to 63.

The underground power and vendor site aims to support activities in the enhanced recreation space – with Council managing various commercial licences such as surf schools, fitness classes, sporting competitions, the Harbourside Markets, and the annual carnival.

The project is being jointly-funded by Council and by the Federal Government through a $600,000 community infrastructure grant.

Momentum is gaining on the revitalisation of the jetty foreshores with the State Government also announcing earlier this week it has been given the green light to begin works on a new waterfront building at the site of the TS Vendetta as part of its redevelopment project.

The existing building will be razed and a new cafe, storage facility and public amenities will be constructed at a cost of $5 million. It will be constructed at the same time as the $15 million essential services and infrastructure upgrades begin in mid-2021.
