NAPLAN results revealed: Searchable lists of Coffs Harbour schools

We have crunched the numbers for Coffs Harbour from the recent NAPLAN test results. See how schools performed for literacy and numeracy.

Learning gap between rich and poor students widened during COVID

The tests were cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 but the latest NAPLAN results are in.

We’ve crunched the numbers to see how Coffs Harbour schools are performing in the key areas of numeracy and literacy.

NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is the only national assessment that all Australian children undertake.

Narranga Public School performed very strongly but principal Michael Trist says it was important to remember that whole-school NAPLAN scores were a limited measure of success.

He said it was most important that parents worked with schools as partners in their child’s education to guarantee better results.

“A good school will provide a balanced curriculum, enrich culture with sporting and performance opportunities, promote student well-being and positive behaviour - and much more,” Mr Trist said.

“It must have high quality teachers.

“Parents can speak to schools and other parents to gain a better idea of whether a school might suit their child.”

Mr Trist, who is also the vice president of the NSW Primary Principals Association, says NAPLAN results give schools and parents a snapshot of literacy and numeracy achievements.

“Schools combine them with their own assessments throughout the year to identify learning needs and provide more comprehensive reports to parents.”

It comes as improvements to NAPLAN, including moving the test to Term One and returning results much earlier, will be implemented from 2023 after a review led by NSW.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased that changes were happening in line with the review initiated by NSW in 2019 to make NAPLAN a more effective diagnostic tool.

“These are necessary changes I have been pushing for over the past two years, particularly following the success of the NSW Check-In Assessments, which give teachers results within 48 hours,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Currently the timing of NAPLAN means it is not diagnostic, as students sit the tests quite late and results are delivered months later, minimising their value in the classroom.”
