Nambucca Heads High teacher Danielle Bowen said it was like she was losing family at the school’s Year 12 formal – and in a sense she was, with her daughter among the graduates.

“I just miss them already, it’s always hard,” teacher Danielle Bowen said as she guided the Nambucca Heads Year 12 cohort for one last time.
It was their school formal and among the graduating group was Ms Bowen’s daughter, Olivia.
But her adoration for all of the students rippled like the Nambucca estuary which snaked around the formal venue chosen by the students – River View Island.
It’s a relatively new venture proving popular with folk from Sydney and Brisbanites wishing to tie the knot, located just west of Nambucca Heads.
Locals say with every 10 kilometres you go inland from the coast, the country music grows louder and by the time you reach Girralong, Missabotti or Taylors’ Arm, it’s full on banjo and the kids are named Billy-Bob and Cooter.
Ms Bowen though was just gobsmacked by the stunning rustic venue and emotional about the transition for her young charges – she’s been their year adviser since they were little snotters in Year 7.
“They are just so easy going and have been so low maintenance,” she said.
“It’s like one of your family is gone.”
The 40-odd Year 12 student body had a lock on River View Island as its venue of choice.
The Farm House at River View was the original Post Office for the Bowraville area, which has a history of logging.
The graduating students had a sense of history too, with one lad chirping that a couple of mates (Dom Lambie and Harrison Lee) had been in the local news over the years as aspiring park cricketers.
Good-natured jibes aside, it is clear they are a tight-knit group.
Paths ahead are unknown, and now it’s time for them to carve their own.
