Mission Australia has announced they will spend more than $2 million dollars fixing up social housing properties on the Mid North Coast.

The NSW Government funding is part of a $40 million stimulus package for community housing providers (CHPs) to deliver capital works for more than 2000 properties across the state.

Mission Australia will work on 71 properties throughout the Mid North Coast region, replacing anything from roofs and guttering, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and fencing.

Water, Property and Housing Minister Melinda Pavey said a majority of the jobs created through the stimulus program would be created in regional areas.

“Alongside CHPs, we’re improving the quality, comfort and safety of homes for thousands of vulnerable people and families throughout NSW,” she said.

While there is a well-documented housing crisis in the region, which has sparked significant debate about both its root cause and strategies to remedy the situation, CHP’s continue to be the driving force behind new initiatives.

Since taking on responsibility for social housing in 2016, not-for-profits like Mission Australia and Community Housing Ltd has been busy building their asset base and trying to respond in a more dynamic way than in the past.

CHL’s managing director Steve Bevington has previously told the Advocate there was “big shift” in the community housing sector in recent years and the Australian of the Year nominee says not-for-profits were in a position to be more “nimble” than government when providing tailored services.

Work is currently underway on Mission Australia’s Duke St social housing development which features 40 one-bedroom apartments in the heart of Coffs Harbour’s CBD.

The $8.6 building will be followed by a multi-million dollar community hub to centralise Mission Australia’s regional services in the one place.
