Labor makes sure crooks pay for community safety projects

PROJECTS in Cowper electorate will benefit from Labor Government funding after one of the last allocations announced before going into caretaker mode.

Labor's Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare, has answered calls from community safety advocates to provide funding that will help safeguard citizens venturing near two notorious hot spots for violence and vandalism.

Coffs Harbour City Council has been provided with $259,500 for a security upgrade of Park Beach Reserve and a further $103,825 for a crime prevention strategy at Toormina Sports Complex.

In addition, Bellingen Shire Council will receive $10,696 to implement a safe and secure program at the Bellingen Swim Centre.

Local projects across NSW will share in more than $12.5 million under the Federal Labor Government's National Crime Prevention Fund.

"We are taking money from criminals and investing it across the country to help young people who are at risk of falling into a life of crime," Minister Clare said.

"The projects are part of the $40 million fund that uses money confiscated from criminals to fund community safety infrastructure and youth outreach services.

"Funds for the program have been included in the Budget."
