A Coffs Harbour teenager has been placed on a good behaviour bond after being caught with three knives, a scalpel and drugs near The Clog Barn tourist attraction.

Judith Smith gave police a number of excuses, including that she used one blade for fishing.

The 19-year-old was sentenced at Coffs Harbour Local Court after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing a prohibited drug and one charge of custody of knife in public place.

When Smith was stopped by police on the Pacific Highway just before midnight on October 8, she told officers she had a knife in her bag as she had been fishing earlier in the evening.

“The accused had no other fishing paraphernalia with her, she was not wearing clothing that would be akin to having been fishing, nor did the knife or other items have any smell of fishing about it,” police state in court documents.

Officers searched Smith’s handbag and backpack – finding a 20 centimetre-long wooden handled knife, which she said was for fishing, plus two pocket knives.

They also found a scalpel which she said she used “for her eyebrows”, as well and two cannabis buds and 0.64g of methylamphetamines.

A charge of larceny against Smith was also revisited by the court.

This related to her picking up a wallet containing cash and failing to return it to a man who had dropped it in the early hours of January 16.

Police facts state Smith had been riding her bike behind the man as he walked along the Pacific Highway between 1am and 2am.

On November 1, Magistrate Theresa Hamilton convicted Smith on one of the drug possession charges, as well as for larceny and custody of a knife. No conviction was recorded in relation to the cannabis charge.

Smith has been placed on a 12-month conditional release order.
