A horrific head-on crash in a suburban street at Toormina has left a man with critical injuries.
Emergency services worked desperately to free the 64-year-old man who was left trapped inside his upturned vehicle after the two-car smash on Sawtell Road on Thursday.
He was found to have suffered leg, pelvis and chest injuries and was rushed to Coffs Harbour hospital in a critical but stable condition.
The three occupants of the second vehicle were able to free themselves and did not suffer significant injuries.
Station Officer at Coffs Harbour Ambulance Station, Dain Willoughby, said NSW Ambulance, SES, Fire and Rescue NSW and police all responded to the incident.
“It was a successful, but difficult situation in that location on Sawtell Road,” he said.
“All agencies worked well together to extricate the person from the vehicle.”
Four ambulances, and multiple Fire and Rescue and SES vehicles were at the scene as a portion of the busy road was closed off between the Wirrabilla Dr and Noomba St intersections.
Traffic was diverted as the clean up was underway.
