Fiery face-off filmed in Coffs Harbour over campaign sign ahead of March 25 state election

The gloves are off in northern NSW in the lead up to the state election as video has emerged of heated scenes in Coffs Harbour over an election sign. See what went down.

A politically provocative corflute sign was at the centre of a heated verbal stoush captured on video in Coffs Harbour at the weekend.

A man wearing a yellow shirt in support of sitting Nationals Coffs Harbour MP Gurmesh Singh was filmed taking the sign and placing it in the boot of a car.

He then comes face-to-face with a woman and another man during the film clip, while a third man provides a running commentary.

The video was posted to the Coffs Harbour Greens Facebook page on Sunday – a week out from the NSW state election on March 25.

It comes as anti-Nationals messaging has also been illegally stencilled on a number of overbridges on the M1 near Coffs Harbour.

The sign at the centre of the stink addresses controversial plans for residential development at the Coffs Harbour Jetty beachside strip.

It’s understood no one, including those in the video, has claimed responsibility for the anti-Nationals signage, which mimics the party’s colours and brand – and includes Mr Singh’s electorate office number.

Greens candidate for Coffs Harbour Tim Nott said: “The sort of ... overbearing ... behaviour displayed in this video has no place in our politics.

“This individual owes those impacted by his behaviour a sincere apology – our community expects, and deserves better,” he said.

A NSW Nationals spokesperson also issued a statement about the incident.

“The NSW Nationals have previously made complaints to the NSW Electoral Commission about the display of this material,” the statement reads.

“The sign in question does not carry an authorisation and is therefore unlawful under section 186 of the Electoral Act 2017.

“Offences for individuals not complying with this section of the Electoral At carry maximum penalties of 20 penalty units or imprisonment for six months, or both.”
