'Confronting' sight as final building demolished at school

WARWICK East community faces a significant rebuilding project after a historic school block was ravaged by fire.

THE Warwick East State School community has been dealt another harsh post-fire reality, with the the historic A block demolished at the weekend.

The building, which was completely destroyed by fire the previous week, was removed by contractors on Sunday.

School crossing guard Denise Cowell said she was shocked by the absence of the building as she entered the school grounds to start her shift this morning.

"It's confronting," Mrs Cowell said.

"I looked up and gasped, it's gone.

"After a week, you got used to the gap but nothing prepares you for that.

"It's just a big empty space now."

Mrs Cowell has shared a long history with Warwick East over the years: Not only did her children and grandchildren attend the school but her great-uncle, Samuel Cooper, also helped to build it.

"It's really sad to see that history go," she said.

"I'm hoping they at least make it similar to what it was and not a modern building.

"But as long as its something the kids can use, I'll be happy."

Foster carer and grandmother Nanette Sandy said she still couldn't believe the destruction the fire had left behind.

"It's looks so odd and bare now," Mrs Sandy said.

"So much is gone, trophies and everything.

"It's such a shame."

Still, Mrs Sandy said she was blown away by the speedy recovery and knows the school will return to its former glory in time.

"There's no good in saying 'oh no' and being despaired.

"We have to be positive it will all work out.

"In the end, everyone got out safely and the fire drills paid off."
