Tributes are pouring in after the death of Gumbaynggirr elder Uncle Mark Flanders.
Uncle Mark Flanders, who passed away on Wednesday morning, was a hugely respected member of the community and was deeply passionate about preserving Aboriginal culture.
He was revered for his storytelling and there was a deep sense of shock and loss across the Coffs Coast and beyond, with hundreds taking to social media to share memories, express sadness and offer condolences to his family.
CEO of the Coffs Harbour and District Local Aboriginal Land Council, Nathan Brennan wrote a touching tribute on the organisation’s Facebook page, explaining that Uncle Mark would be dearly missed.
As Discovery Ranger with NSW National Parks Uncle Mark delivered a number of cultural education programs and Mr Brennan said his legacy extended to “every corner” of the Gumbaynggirr nation.
He also passionately advocated for, and protected, Gumbaynggirr cultural sites and objects through his role with the Coffs Harbour & District ALC as a senior Cultural Heritage Officer.
“We have lost an irreplaceable and tremendous book of knowledge from the living library of the Gumbaynggirr people,” Mr Brennan said.
“We will remember everything you've taught us, and will continue the legacy you’ve so generously gave to us.
“The legacy of a life committed to protecting, living and sharing our Gumbaynggirr culture, knowledge and country.
“Yaanyjing yuludarlala (walking in the dreaming).”
