Skippers are being warned to take care launching at Coffs Harbour boat ramp after reports a significant build up of sand is posing problems yet again.
Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour has said wild weather over the last few weeks has contributed to the creation of a sandbar “beyond the reach of excavators” outside the mouth of the boat ramp.
“This little sandbar is causing boats to bottom out or catch their props on, on the way in or the way out of the boat ramp area,” they stated.
“Please be aware, take care and spread the word.”
The Coffs Harbour boat ramp has been plagued by sand build up for years which consistently has to be removed by council excavators.
This year the NSW Government followed through on its election promise to redevelop the area, pledging an extra $4 million on top of the previously promised $10m to go towards extending the breakwall and widening of the boat ramp lanes.
The money was part of “fast tracked” maritime upgrades to stimulate local economies and help communities recover from the economic effects of coronavirus.
Recreational fishers have been calling for the upgrades for years.
