Coffs City United Lions fell just short in their campaign to become the first Mid North Coast club to make the FFA Cup round of 32.
The Coffs Harbour Club lost 1 - 0 away to their heavily fancied opponents Newcastle Olympic, bringing an end to a memorable campaign.
Backing up after an epic encounter against Lake Macquarie City just two days ago, the Lions were undone by an unlucky deflected goal.
Throughout the match the side, who are leading the Coastal Premier League, defended resolutely and asked questions of the Olympic defence themselves. But on 66 minutes their defence failed to deal adequately with a cross and an attempted clearance was bundled in by an Olympic attacker.
It will be a bitter pill to swallow for the club who have more than matched their Northern NSW Football opponents in recent days. Their win against Lake Macquarie will go down in Lions’ folklore after they beat the NPL side 5 - 4 on penalties in a rollicking affair.
At the end of extra time the teams were level on 3 goals a piece and the lead had changed hands three times.
A win against Olympic would have meant a possible A-League match up for the Coastal Premier League champions.
