Bonza airlines has launched its first flights from the Sunshine Coast to Coffs Harbour in northern NSW – and it’s hoped there’s more to come.

It’s been revealed the flights starting from $49 per person will operate on Thursdays and Sundays.

Coffs Harbour is the 12th destination by Bonza from the Sunshine Coast.

Coffs Harbour Mayor Paul Amos said the flights would not only connect Coffs to Noosa, but moreover the North Coast to Far North Queensland.

He expected tourists would stop in at Coffs on their way to the Great Barrier Reef.

“Because you can go to Noosa for $50, and then another $50 to places like Cairns and Mackay,” he said.

Mr Amos said the new flights would bring more visitors into the region, spending money at local businesses.

“And the owners have indicated to me that they are very interested in making these sort of connections to the south as they expand.”

“Which if that happens, will be marvellous for Coffs.”

Coffs Harbour Airport general manager Frank Mondello said: “This direct route is a first between the two regions and is a major milestone that will have far reaching economic benefits … ”

“This new route will increase the passenger numbers arriving into Coffs Harbour Airport, who will be able to travel quickly and easily for business or pleasure, and will offer a wonderful holiday alternative for travellers wanting to explore the beautiful Coffs Coast region,” he said.

The new route connects the Big Banana and Big Pineapple, but Mr Mondello said that’s not all each region had to offer.

“We’re also known for our pristine beaches, laid back lifestyle and incredible variety of nature that includes everything from mountains to rainforests, and we look forward to welcoming visitors on these new flights,” he said.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said the new route would make air travel affordable and accessible between the two regions.

“Instead of a five-hour drive, you can fly between the two destinations in just over an hour. It is a great outcome for both regions,” he said.

All routes on Bonza’s initial route map will be introduced by May 23 with destinations including Tamworth, Bundaberg and Gladstone to come.
