WITH temperatures in some parts of NSW expected to exceed 40 degrees over the holiday break, NSW Ambulance is urging people to stay cool, hydrated and if possible, keep out of the heat.

A 75-year-old man at Bellingen was among 31 people from across the state in the past two days to receive emergency assistance after suffering from heat stroke or exhaustion.

Ambulance staff have reported an increase in call-outs to people suffering dizziness, fainting and nausea.

The heat, especially when combined with a pre-existing condition, has the potential to cause serious illness, and even death.

Sunburn, dehydration and heat exposure can all lead to heat stroke.

They urge everybody to drink plenty of water and if outdoors, cover up with appropriate clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and use sunscreen.

Never leave children or pets shut in a motor vehicle or enclosed space.

Paramedics have also stressed a message of community care, asking people to take a few moments to check on the well-being of elderly family and friends.

For any emergency call Triple Zero (000) immediately and ask for the ambulance.
