Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore is joining forces with Hollywood legend and climate change activist Jane Fonda to stop global warming.

Ms Moore is prerecording a talk on “a green led recovery” with the 83-year-old actor who shot to fame in the movie Barbarella 50 years ago and has been an outspoken campaigner against climate change.

An invite to the online CityTalk event sent out last night said it aims to “help progress a national conversation about the urgent action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, improve affordability and drive economic opportunity.”

Ms Fonda has been arrested several times for disobedience while protesting against climate change in Washington DC and has called for fossil fuel companies to be held accountable “like at Nuremberg”.

After the prerecorded chat between the Sydney Lord Mayor and the actor on March 30, ABC presenter Patricia Karvelas will host a discussion panel featuring NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean and federal independent MP Zali Steggall.

Promotion for the event said it wants governments, business and communities to collaborate on climate change. “It is long past time we take a similar approach and accelerate bold innovation and urgent responses to the climate crisis.”

Previous speakers at CityTalks events have included American feminist and social political activist Gloria Steinem in conversation with the ABC’s Leigh Sales, which also coincided with a City of Sydney election year.

A City of Sydney spokesperson said Jane Fonda was not being paid for taking part in the City Talks.

“Given her many years of activism and the recent launch of her book on climate change, we extended an invitation to Ms Fonda to be a keynote speaker at our forthcoming event: ‘A green led recovery – bold action for a more resilient future’,” the spokesperson said.

“Ms Fonda will join other climate leaders including Professor Ross Garnaut, Minister for Energy and Environment Matt Kean and Independent Member for Warringah Zali Steggall.”
