City of Sydney council is turning to the world’s best pest control experts to find a solution for its growing rat population.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has commissioned a study which will examine what international cities are doing to rid themselves of the pests.

“Responding to the outbreak of Leptospirosis, last month council committed to doubling rat baiting stations in City of Sydney-owned public areas. Our staff are also monitoring the baits more often. It is too early to determine how effective these baits have been,” a spokeswoman told The Saturday Telegraph.

“Additional to the increase in baits and monitoring, the city has also commissioned a study into rat eradication. The purpose of the study is to identify the safest and most effective initiatives used in cities with similar conditions to Sydney.”

The council has also contacted Sydney Trains, Property NSW and NSW Land and Housing Corporation in an effort to co-ordinate a joint pest control response.

They said a rise in illegal dumping has sparked the growth in rat numbers and are targeting dumping hot spots, poor waste management and filling rat holes in response.

Shopping centres and eateries are also being targeted by environment health inspectors and residents are encouraged to regularly carry out pest control checks on their property.

The council did not comment on when the study will be finished.
