A deconsecrated Sydney church – which has sat vacant for over a decade – is set to be transformed into a bougie restaurant and commercial precinct as part of a multimillion-dollar plan to revitalise the site.

Developer TOGA this month got the tick of approval for its ambitious vision for 422-424 Cleveland St, Surry Hills, after the City of Sydney local planning panel green-lit plans for an expansive 200-patron dining hall to be developed inside the walls of the church.

Meanwhile, a new six-storey commercial building will be developed behind the church, including a kitchen for the restaurant and four levels of commercial offices.

Planners for the $5.2 million project said it was “the next piece in the puzzle of the precinct revival at the intersection of Crown, Baptist, and Cleveland streets”.

“The Kirk will offer a boutique range of hospitality and workspaces to complement the evolving Wunderlich Lane in Surry Hills Village,” the planner said.

“These spaces will be designed to accommodate the needs of innovative businesses and visitors.

“TOGA’s ambition is to create a welcoming destination for the wider community, attracting residents, workers, and visitors to our new offering at The Kirk.”

Original plans for the site would have seen it turned into a five-storey boarding house – featuring 25 units – however the proposal was revised in November last year.

Planners said the dining hall would open from 7am to 10pm on Tuesday to Sunday, while the eatery would be open until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Local planning panel officials approved the development last week.
